Every year on October 21st, Reptile Awareness Day reminds us of the incredible diversity and importance of reptiles in our ecosystems. From scaly to slimy, these fascinating creatures play vital roles in maintaining ecological balance. Here in Minnesota, we’re fortunate to host a variety of native reptiles that call our state home.

Minnesota's Reptilian Residents

  1. Common Garter Snake: One of the most common snakes in Minnesota, the Common Garter Snake can be found in gardens, forests, and wetlands. They’re harmless and help control pest populations.

  2. Common Snapping Turtle: Often seen basking on logs or crossing roads, snapping turtles are iconic to Minnesota waterways. They may look tough, but they play an essential role in aquatic ecosystems.

  3. Painted Turtle: This vibrant turtle is easily recognized by its colorful markings and is commonly found in ponds and slow-moving rivers. Painted turtles are a delight to observe, especially when they sunbathe on rocks!

  4. Northern Water Snake: This semi-aquatic snake is often mistaken for its venomous cousin, the water moccasin, but it’s completely harmless. It can be found near lakes and rivers, preying on fish and amphibians..

As we celebrate these unique reptiles, it’s also a great time to remind ourselves of the importance of responsible pet ownership. If you're considering adding a reptile to your family, make sure you find a suitable home that meets their needs!

And if you need help finding that perfect place—complete with a cozy corner for your new scaly friend—reach out to Root Down Realty. We’ll help you find a home where both you and your reptile can thrive!
